Victoria’s Secrets: Power, Money, Art
Monday 27 October
19:00 – 21:00
This nocturnal walk with the writer Douglas Murphy and artist Rut Blees Luxemburg, will take us to Victoria Street, which is currently in the process of a transformation on a gigantic scale.
Victoria Street is bracketed by the Houses of Parliament on the south – and the Apollo theatre on the west side. The walk is an attempt to understand the complex fabric of the urban realm: from the seat of power to the resistant dwelling of culture via the current mega developments that are being presently erected on the street. We will try to grasp the connections and tensions between the historical buildings and the new structures that are transforming the city, and all the while being alert to the role that art is playing in this process: from the modernist commission by the sculptor Eric Gill in Westminster Cathedral to the contemporary manifestations of public art.
